Dads Tractor
This old Farmall and my father were near best friends. Without a lot of imagination I can still see him, worn green John Deere hat cocked to one side and smiling as he rode across the field in back of the house.
Together, they pulled stumps, hauled countless cords maple and birch from the woods that was used to heat the farm during the coldest of Maine's winter days and provided many a joy ride to my children, his grand children, Caryn Gene and Craig Thomas. On days when there weren't many chores he'd start it up and run it anyway.
Today the ole Farmall sits solitary with grass growing around it, by the side of a big red barn, missing his old friend. Like we all do.

Lobster Boat
I am drawn to the Maine sea coast and its way of life. A foggy morning drizzle set the perfect mood for this old fishing vessel. The gray mood of the day and wear and tear of the old boat were further accentuated using Photoshop to create a partial grayscale background. This photo was taken on a Nikon D300 with an 18-200mm lens.
Lobster Buoy with Morning Dew
This is an attempt to be a bit abstract. Without the title for this image almost no one knows what it is. A cold November morning had left a heavy frost on a lobster buoy that began to melt as the morning sun came up. I used an 80-200mm lens for a close crop and was able to catch the small water droplets as they formed and before they merged together. This photo hangs in my home as a 20X30 printed on archive quality matte paper.
Old Boat
From up close the curvature of the bow and the position of the porthole give this image an almost whale-like appearance. The direct low afternoon sun provided perfect illumination to show the washed and weathered nature of each and every board on the old boats hull.
This photo was taken in the summer of 2013 in Cornucopia, Wisconsin using a Nikon 24-70mm lens on a D800 body.
Orange Leaves on Branch
If you can’t find a decent subject and composition when you are out shooting, then make one. Take two colored leaves, place them in opposite orientations on an old tree branch and voila you have a picture. I used Photoshop 6.0 to make the image more dramatic by selecting the background, making it black and white and then significantly over saturating the color of the leaves. The result is a classic fall composition with stunning color and contrast.
Pemaquid Window
Sitting atop steep rocky ledges with crashing surf below this lighthouse and the surrounding landscape are nothing short of beautiful. In landscape photography we tend to want to capture the majesty of a wide scenic view. This can oft times be represented through a simpler and more creative photo.
This photo features a composition of just enough of the tower, with ocean background along with reflected light from the rising morning sun in the tower window for the viewer to know it’s a lighthouse. The morning sun also cast a rose colored hue onto the lighthouse that adds to the pictures nostalgic warmth and leaves the rest of the scene to the viewer’s best imagination.
Sometimes, less can be more in photography!
Pemaquid Point lighthouse located in Bristol, Maine was commissioned in 1827 by John Quincy Adams.

Farm Equippment
One of my favorite things to do is to take off on the motorcycle and photograph old farm equippment as I tour the back county roads of Southern Wisconsin on a warm summer day. The rolling farm land is scattered with old tractors, trucks, barns and other equipment that make for great black and white photos.
Shot from a low angle using a Nikon D800 with a 24-70mm lens this piece of equipment had an ominous almost threatening appearance as it was backlit by the bright afternoon sun.
Farmers Market Peppers
The Farmers' Market that takes place around the Capitol Square is one of the most unique events in Madison, Wisconsin. Every Saturday morning throughout the summer and into the early fall nearly 200 area farmers sell home grown produce and baked goods. I find the rich and saturated color of the organized rows of peppers, corn, squash and other vegetables to be perfect photography subjects.
With live music, coffee and plenty to snack on it's a great way to spend a few peaceful hours doing something that I love to do, take pictures. The Farmers Market is a true taste of Madison and something to be experienced if you visit.
Window Tulips
I am lucky that I have gotten to travel internationally through my work. This photo was taken in Den Hague, Netherlands. The original photo was of the full double pane window and was marred by excessive dust, cobwebs and glare on the glass. Photoshop was used to clean up the image and create the version shown here. Contact me if would like to know more about how the picture was transformed into a work of art. This photo hangs in in my house as a 16 X 16 printed on archive quality matte paper.
